Simplemente Madera Marketplace S.A. (SMM) was created in 2017 with the aim of developing inclusive value chains for timber derived from secondary and degraded forests in Nicaragua. SMM involved three indigenous communities SIPBAA, El Naranjal and Layasiksa in the North Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region (the RACCN), an area of great environmental significance, given high rates of illegal logging and the advancement of the agricultural frontier. The company also developed a pioneering “fair market access” model whereby a fair profit from timber sales to small and medium-sized carpenters in Nicaragua and to export markets flow back to the communities.
